OFF-TOPIC: Apologize again...
... for not posting for some time but we had some emergencies with "our" poor pigeons again.
We had released Jimi after he had completely recovered from his PMV relapse and not even 24 hours later he came back, life-threateningly injured probably by another pigeon. He probably went back to his old nest somewhere and it was occupied by another pigeon. Jimi probably claimed it back and had a fight with his opponent for death or life.
His beautiful face was all bloody and his beak cracked at several places. His cere was a bloody mess - thank heaven his eyes were not injured. Now he is recovering but still needs intensive care...

OFF-TOPIC: Sick Pigeons again...
I am way behind posting again but I have 3 sick pigeons again who require a lot of extra care. But I love these birds so much - therefore everything else has to stay behind.
As you may remember - when you are reading the Pigeon Tales - we had several cases of PMV infections among our balcony pigeons. All of them recovered completely. But these days our beloved Pina was showing severe symptoms again such as stargazing and she refused to fly out with her mate Rudi for several weeks. She felt insecure and as she is a very clever girl she preferred to stay in the saftety of our appartment.
Then Micky started to show severe symptoms also, flying like a Kamikaze but she somehow managed to land safely every time. Curently she is often inside together with her mate Gino and I am glad about this. Because this way she can relax better and therefore stargazes less.
Finally Jimi came late in the afternoon 2 weeks ago and did not want to leave again. So I put him into one of my hospital boxes and there he is since then, sitting on the edge most of the time, protected behind a mosquito net so that neither Rudi nor Gino can molest him. I have to tube feed him 3 times a day as he refuses to eat by himself. His intestines are affected by the virus therefore his digestion is pretty poor. But baby cereal with applesauce and joghurt help. Additionally he gets some pro-biotics. Jimi is also a very clever pigeon. He came back home to his mommy when he felt bad. Isn't this sweet?
Yesterday was a good day though for everbody. They all had a bath and afterwards they relaxed on the sofa, on our bed etc....

Yipppee!!!! This blog just passed the 100.000th Pageview!
A big THANK YOU to all my Readers - this blog just passed the 100.000 page view mark. I would never have thought that this would happen to such a small niche blog. I did not even think that it would survive for so long and that you would continue to show interest for all the little unimportant things I had to say. I feel humbled and honoured.
I wished I could write more and spend much more time on all the interesting things I find on the internet. I will try my best to continue to offer you more ideas about art and everything related to it because it is so much joy to dive into the world of colour and form. And maybe you will find the one or other creative spark for yourself...

OFF-TOPIC: What I have been doing lately again...
This has nothing to do with interior design and only very peripherally something with art (because they are my painting models) but I was a bit drowned again - too many sick pigeons to care for. But I love them dearly and cannot see them suffer if they need my help. And somehow they always find their way to our place...
This is Micky, who came to us 1rst of November last year with a bad PMV infection. She could not fly any more, not eat by herself. With her last energy reserve she managed to get to our balcony. 4 Months later she could be released after intensive care, such as hand and tube feeding, keeping her warm, doing training exercises with her when she became a bit better, etc.
During this time she has become an incredibly sweet pigeon, very affectionate and tame. I am so happy that she recovered fully and can now live the life of a pigeon again - flying free - but coming home still each day for sleeping during the night in her box, taking her meals here or just a little nap on the bookshelves:
Then we found Gino - or rather he found us - a squeaker, totally undernourished, hardly being able to fly, extremely thin but otherwise healthy with badly developed plumage - his tail feathers were nearly all broken or badly developed, no real downy feathers to keep him warm. It was a miracle that he had survived the big cold. He is with us since 4 weeks now and has developed into a very funny sweet little chap with a big big appetite. He managed to increase his body weight from 210 gr to more than 300 gr which is nearly 30 %.
He is growing new feathers like crazy, does his helicopter training in his den (within a mosquito net that I am mounting every day for his safety in my studio), has lost nearly all his bad feathers now but cannot really fly yet. He must train his flying skills first before we can release him. Oh my - what a shitty bunch of parents this poor little creature must have had whose responsibility would have been to nourish their little one and teach him everything he needs to know. But then they might have had big problems to find food for themselves not to speak of for a baby. Who knows. Now we have to do this instead and it is so much fun to watch him. He is incredibly sneeky and he makes good progress.
Now look at his nose - there were even feathers missing above his cere...
And then we had Hatty who had paralyzed legs due to a severe calcium deficiency probably after egg laying. Giving her calcium for 4 days made her able to walk again. It was a big relief. She still comes in to get her breakfast and/or lunch here.
Then we had another pigeon with a drooping wing but besides cleaning the wound she had on it several times probably from an old break I could do nothing else for her.
This is it for the moment and I hope very much that there will not be any more sick pigeons so that I have a bit more time for my regular work again...

GUEST POST: Inspiring Students to Pursue Art and Design
I am late with starting to post this year. But I have an excuse: had to work on the entries of my Pigeon Tales which were hopelessly behind. As this blog/diary is an affair of my heart you will understand that I shortly switched priorities. But now I am nearly on track and can start freshly this year with a very nice article by Alicia Moore, a writer for OnlineTeachingDegree.com about
Inspiring Students to Pursue Art and Design
The United States Department of Education states that the arts are one of the core essentials of a complete education, ranking it along with subjects like English, math and social studies. In fact, art and design are not only enriching activities that allow for creative expression, but they can also be meaningful career paths that allow young adults to pursue work in fields ranging from advertising to media production. Why then, are so many young adults turning away from the arts?
One of the issues that prevents young adults from developing an interest in the arts is that they feel that they lack the talent to be successful. The truth of the matter is that being good at art is the same as good at cooking, sports or math. The key is learning the techniques that are used and then being consistent about practicing them. This is why it is essential that art classes remain a staple of middle school and high school settings. When classes in the arts are provided in school, students are given a stage for their art, as well as a time and a place for doing it. An art class can also introduce students to various types of media that they never considered before, boarding their scope of how they view the world. Thus teachers should an effort to ensure art is emphasized in the classroom. If you are unsure about how to do so, check out sites like Online Teaching Degree, which provide a numbers of resources and lesson plans for new and practiced teachers alike.
Young adults are also often discouraged from pursuing the arts because they or their parents believe that the arts are useless. To the contrary, art can lead to careers in a number of different industries and with a number of different companies. One way to expose students to the options that are open to them is to introduce them to artists in their own community. Look around on artists boards and speak with people who are making a living from their art and design work, or even making part of their living off of the things they make. Bring these people in to class and have them explain what they do and how they do it. Simply seeing and talking to someone else who is a successful artist will allow students to realize the obtaining a career in art and in design is as impossible as they may think.
Another benefit of inviting an artist to come speak to your class is that the speaker can inform students about the ins and outs of art and design as a career. For example, it is fairly difficult to go straight from school into a career in the arts, no matter how prestigious of a school a students attends. Instead many artists get their start by freelancing, becoming more successful and more well-known as the years pass. In the meantime, the young artists will need to know how to handle their finances and their taxes, as they will be self-employed. They will also need instruction on putting together a portfolio and how present themselves when they are talking to possible employers. By hearing how another artist tackled these tasks, students will be able to plan out a path of success for themselves and approach making art as they would any other job.
Ultimately, young adults must be encouraged to create art, and one way to do so is to make sure that they have the materials handy. Young artists cannot create professional quality work if they are trying to do so with student-grade or recreational materials. In order to supply them to your students, look around and see if local businesses are willing to offer student discounts on some of their materials. Even moving to a semi-professional grade of materials can open up broad horizons to young artists.
It is also a good idea to encourage young people who are interested in the arts to work together. There is a stereotype that artists are moody or withdrawn, but the truth of the matter is that frequently, artist are neither. They are simply people who are interested in the act of creation and in the arrangement of design elements. If possible, hold meet ups or other meetings for young adults who are passionate about the art that they are making. This allows them to open up to their peers and to learn from one another. This type of meeting can be a formal peer review or it might be something significantly more casual, like a time when people can talk about the kind of work they are doing.
Consider how you can engage young people and get them invested in art and design; this is a great way to open up whole new vistas for young adults looking for a career.

OFF-TOPIC: I have to apologize again...
I am afraid I have to apologize again for not posting but the problems with our sweet pigeons do not go away. Maybe it is the crazy weather which plays tricks on humans and animals likewise but life does not always go as easy and smooth as we could wish.
We have taken responsibility to care and now we have to do what is more important: do everything that leads to a complete recovery. But I think we are well on the way. Nothing is more awarding than seeing a bird in full health again and being happy.
At the moment Micky, the young pigeon that got PMV, has got canker as well due to her low immune system. And our sweet Pina became sick also with canker but she is okay again. Her immune system is very strong so she quickly conquered the canker with some medication. Some more pigeons had to be treated - so no time for posting. But we are on the way...
Btw - would you have assumed that this is a pigeon nest? Yes - this is the nest of Lucky and Emily on our balcony with their private flower garden:

Some more Emergencies among our Balcony Pigeons
We had a new outbreak of PMV among our balcony pigeons - so most of my time went into treating them as far as this was possible. So no time again for blogging. Only one young pigeon girl, our Micky, had to be hospitalized because her symptoms were quite heavy: stargazing, trembling, circling and last not least she could not eat any more by herself. With her last energy she fortunately landed on our balcony so that I could take her in immediately. She soon also lost her ability to fly. So this would have been her certain death sentence if left outside.
In the meanwhile the sick ones outside are nearly recovered (with the help of carrot juice) - apparently this time thank heaven it was a weaker strain of PMV - only our Micky will need some time still to regain her abilities. Currently she still has to be handfed 3 times a day and her digestion works very well which helps a lot with her recovery. She is such a sweet and obedient patient...
I hope that this baby can fly soon again and enjoy her life as she is supposed to...

Sorry for not posting - but there was an Emergency...
When you think you have time again to write there is definitely something coming your way that needs your attention. This time it was a sick pigeon again (I sometimes wonder how they find me???).
I had observed her already a day before I could catch her and realized that there was something sticking to her chest or coming out of her chest and knew immediately that there was something wrong.
After I had caught her (we named her Lotti) we could do a close examination. I realized that she had a crop rupture, a hole the size of a 5 eurocent piece (2cm in diameter) in her crop and the food was coming out of it. Well - I rather spare you the details - fact is, that she healed completely in our care and was released again this morning.
Crop ruptures are nasty because when this is not treated (closed) the pigeon normally dies of infection which is a slow death. Imagine you have a hole in your stomac and your dinner is coming out of it. This time it went very well because Lotti found us on time before anything really bad could happen.
I am so happy...

About 2 weeks ago I realized that the thumbnail images in my blogrolls did not appear any more - only a few were showing up but most had disappeared.I realized in the comments of other blogger that I was not the only one with this problem.
It took some time to find the answer in the help forums i.e. there is a work around until this problem has been fixed - therefore I am posting this here in case you are desperately looking for a solution as well:

Go into the "edit" mode of your post, look for the first image that will normally appear as thumbnail and replace the following:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Be sure to do this twice in the code of your first image - otherwise it will not work!If you do these substitutions in your first image, the thumbnail will be generated without problem."

A little Reminder...

I also opened an account on Etsy for my art work so that shopping becomes an easy task. I also wanted to give those people a better feeling of security who do not know me yet. I think it is always a good thing to have an independant organisation to watch over business issues in case you would have any complaints.
I have placed a little button that is linked to my Etsy shop on each work that is represented on Art for Sophisticated Interior to make it even easier to access without sending you around unnecessarily. I have to "warn" you though - at the moment there are only 2 small pieces in the shop waiting for more additions as soon as I find the time to place them there.

Art for Sophisticated Interior
In case you did not know yet I created another little blog as a resource and selling platform for my (currently) art work so that it can easily be found, with lots of detail photos and little text. The images should speak for themselves.
Lots of keywords have been entered, so that you can look for colours, various media, themes, titles. Additionally I added a search function which also should help to find things quickly. I thought that this is much easier to handle than a website or a blog where you have to scroll through lots of text.
Nevertheless I am offering links to the descriptions and "making of" the pieces - in case you want to know - and links to this blog here with examples of rooms where the art could look simply great.
The idea of the additional blog came into my mind because I often find websites and blogs where it is absolutely not evident at all whether you can buy the objects that are shown and where you can buy it. Even contacts are sometimes difficult to find. You have to look around and search, it takes too much time and in the end I believe potential customers are simply frustrated and give up. I don't want to repeat these mistakes.
The subject "prices" though is an entirely different thing. Although my prices are fixed in general I still want to have a chance for negotiation on certain works. Prices are also dependant on shipping and insurance costs. I can guarantee though that I will answer any question regarding my work within 24 hours.

Art and Interior - a "Market Niche"
When I started this blog I never thought of being unique with the theme "Art and Interior" - I only thought it to be quite a nice and entertaining idea. Of course this little blog is nothing spectacular and my intention was not presenting only top notch interior designs - this is the job of those who are exclusively working for a special clientele.
My intention rather was to present ideas of a working artist who goes a bit further than just finishing a piece of art, selling it and never caring for where it is going to or in which environment it would settle. I am sure there are quite a few artists out there who do care but either they are not talking about it or they do not want to make it public so that the examples could be seen by a broader audience. I think this is a big mistake.
Admittedly - I am talking about my own art work exclusively at the moment - not about other art that could be placed in certain rooms - but this is not the point. The point is that I think that most people feel intimidated by art and therefore feel inadequate to judge where a piece of art could look good and where it is just out of place not to talk about craftmanship and lack of professional execution. I am not talking about art you might have found in a flea market (I love flea markets and art that can be found there) - I am also not talking about art bought by collectors for millions of bucks and not meant to embellish the walls of a small family home - I am talking about art that has a reasonable price, that represents professional workmanship, originality and uniqueness and that creates an emotional relationship with the buyer.
I am sure that exactly emotion is the most common impetus for buying art without knowing at that point of time in which environment it would settle in. Second place takes probably the wish to find anything that fits in a certain room above the sofa or the mantle of the fireplace. That is perfectly acceptable. What sense would it make to buy a painting only because you like it and then you have absolutely no place where it would fit? And even worse - you buy a painting and the place you have found for it is an awful match. Very quickly you would regret having bought the whole thing and curse the impetus that has made you buy art. This does not help the art in general nor the next artist.
And here we have the dilemma. Most people who care for art - or visit a museum or an art opening from time to time - feel what they are drawn too but they don't trust their own judgement. So for proper room design they either consult an interior designer or an art dealer/gallerist. But why not the artist her/himself? Wouldn't it be more appropriate and right to go to the source, to consult that person who knows the most about a certain art piece? And why are artists so reluctant to consider their work a product that needs the same introduction, a certain "maintenance" and care as any other sophisticated product?
I very much hope that my little blog here contributes to seeing art as something available and approachable and not something mysterious and detached. I think the more examples you see where interior design and art are creating a unique entity the more confident people will become to make their own decisions. And maybe the more real art (not the cheap prints, posters and reproductions) will find its way into the homes of people who just have an affinity for aesthetics...

I am not talking about art you might have found in a flea market (I love flea markets and art that can be found there) - I am also not talking about art bought by collectors for millions of bucks and not meant to embellish the walls of a small family home - I am talking about art that has a reasonable price, that represents professional workmanship, originality and uniqueness and that creates an emotional relationship with the buyer.
I am sure that exactly emotion is the most common impetus for buying art without knowing at that point of time in which environment it would settle in. Second place takes probably the wish to find anything that fits in a certain room above the sofa or the mantle of the fireplace. That is perfectly acceptable. What sense would it make to buy a painting only because you like it and then you have absolutely no place where it would fit? And even worse - you buy a painting and the place you have found for it is an awful match. Very quickly you would regret having bought the whole thing and curse the impetus that has made you buy art. This does not help the art in general nor the next artist.
And here we have the dilemma. Most people who care for art - or visit a museum or an art opening from time to time - feel what they are drawn too but they don't trust their own judgement. So for proper room design they either consult an interior designer or an art dealer/gallerist. But why not the artist her/himself? Wouldn't it be more appropriate and right to go to the source, to consult that person who knows the most about a certain art piece? And why are artists so reluctant to consider their work a product that needs the same introduction, a certain "maintenance" and care as any other sophisticated product?
I very much hope that my little blog here contributes to seeing art as something available and approachable and not something mysterious and detached. I think the more examples you see where interior design and art are creating a unique entity the more confident people will become to make their own decisions. And maybe the more real art (not the cheap prints, posters and reproductions) will find its way into the homes of people who just have an affinity for aesthetics...

I have to apologize again...
Two weeks ago it looked as if I could return to a regular posting again - not so. Somehow there is someone who needs me for different jobs which take over my daily routine: I have another very sick pigeon hospitalized and have to take care for the little bird intensively.
You may call me a nut but these creatures have a soul, feelings and lots of character which some people are terribly missing. Pigeons have a very special relationship to humans and they show personalities with attributes which really remind very much of human virtues and failures. But most people do not care about this or have never made an effort to observe closely. Very sad because they miss a lot. They might miss what life is all about...
I do care and therefore - I am afraid - blogging is on the lower part of my priority list. But I will return soon and look forward to "seeing" you again...

I have not been lazy...
We are in the second week of the new year already and it is time to pick up writing again. I hope you all had a nice switch from the old year and now are full of energy to realize all your plans you made.
I am not going to list mine now in a long sermon - plans are only plans, goals - whether they can become achievements we will see at the end of this year. But I am working on them and I am optimistic. Every year is a new chance to change something, to reset your values like cleaning up your computer and I find it extremely exciting where the paths are leading to.
While I still have to take care for my 3 sweet pigeons who are still sick it also has become a kind of routine, giving me time to go back to my main profession and obsession - painting. With little relapses from time to time where I have to intensivate care there are little steps of progress though which help me to believe that all 3 of them are recovering one day. They are like a family member to me that is in need of care. This can take a lot of your time, it cuts off part of your freedom but on the other hand you get back much love and joy. Without this I would never have been able to start my new painting series about our pigeons with that intensity and understanding. You obtain a deeper insight into their personalities which would be impossible without living with them so closely.
I very much hope that I can pass this understanding, beauty and magnificence of these birds on to you, the viewer.
And if the paintings can change prejudices, profound aversion and misjudgements of a few people only I have already achieved my goal.
Currently I have finished 3 paintings and am working on number 4. I have placed these paintings into a virtual gallery in order to show them as a unit. Depending on the right frames these paintings will easily fit into many interiors.
